Don’t Just Rely On The Portfolio
There’s no doubt that a portfolio for a designer is an important resource for you to depend on. After all, it gives you examples of previous work. With that being said, do not simply depend on a portfolio alone and expect a great portfolio to necessarily translate to a great experience working with a designer. After all, you would not rely solely on a resume to hire someone. You’d bring them in for one, two or maybe even three interviews. You’d get to know them. You’d reach out to references. You should undertake a similar process when hiring a designer.
Try To Put Them Through Some Basic Tasks
When businesses are hiring people in more creative roles, such as writers, designers or something similar, it is quite common for those businesses to ask for a new sample. This means a small, new task that you give them a certain amount of time to complete. Keep in mind, this is not free work. This is something very simple and straightforward that will only take a short amount of time to complete. Why this is important, however, is because it gives businesses an idea of how well designers listen to direction, how quickly they are able to complete tasks, and how responsive they are.
Check Relevant Experience
One very important thing to check in on is to make sure that they have experience with the kind of work that they will be tasked with if you bring them along. No matter how great their past work has been, if they are not familiar with the types of jobs you will be giving them and the types of programs you expect them to use, then the partnership will likely not be very productive or long-lived.
Trust Your Gut
A great rule whenever you are hiring someone for a new position is to simply trust your instincts. If you are loving the way a conversation is going during a specific interview, chances are good your relationship with that designer will blossom and only get better from there.
Offer Competitive Rates
Just because you don’t know what exactly goes into designing does not mean that you should try to get a huge bargain. If you want to hire a great designer, offer a great rate. That will ensure that the designer that you want to work with will be ecstatic to work with you.
